PHOS LysLaboratorium creates and supplies hand-crafted candles made from 100% pure beeswax. Our wax is certified and sourced from Denmark and Northern Europe. We are dedicated to producing the best candles using the finest materials—candles that burn cleanly, last long, and drip minimally, while also supporting the well-being of honey bee populations, the world’s most vital and efficient pollinators.
Our candles are ethical, clean, natural, and sustainable. We use only certified clean cotton wicks and dyes derived from pure plant or vegetable materials or natural pigments. We are firmly committed to ethical and sustainable practices, avoiding both waste and greenwashing.
Beeswax is the best-burning and healthiest material for candles. It has a natural, soothing aroma and is produced in minute quantities by living creatures.
All our candles are handmade in the workshop using traditional candle-making techniques. The beeswax, which is untreated with chemicals, is melted over hot water to prevent burning and discolouration.
If dyed, dried materials are mixed and added and the hot wax is then poured through gauze to remove the residue. After cooling down to the correct temperature, the wax is ready for dipping or pouring, depending on the type of candle being made.
In nature, beeswax is used to store honey, pollen, and other substances. The wax becomes infused with these and takes on the familiar yellow beeswax colour. White or pearl coloured wax has been bleached without chemicals, using ultraviolet light. To dye the wax, we use dried plant materials and natural minerals.
The braided round wick, specially made for use with beeswax, determines the size of the flame as well as the burn time of the candle. The correct wick size is important to maximize the flame size while minimizing the burn time. The wick size also determines the circumference of the candle itself.
